5 Tips for Introverts During the Holidays
It’s the holiday season. The warm, fuzzy feeling that comes this time of year puts joy in my heart. It also can be overwhelming for an introvert like me. There are often guests staying in our house, parties to attend, events for the kids, and other festivities to go to. The hustle and bustle sometimes leaves me feeling frazzled. It’s important that I put boundaries around my time and make self-care an even bigger priority this time of year.
Here are some tips for you, or family members, friends, and clients that may struggle with this over the holidays…
- Schedule downtime– I do enjoy being around people, but also really need time to recharge on my own. If guests are staying at our house, I will take the dog for a walk or go for a run to reset my mind.
- Don’t say yes to everything– this is a hard one for a recovering people pleaser like me, but so important! What are the activities and events that give you joy this season? Sure, there are commitments that you must keep, but is there anything on your list that is stressful and unnecessary?
- Give yourself and exit strategy– It’s ok to stay for an hour instead of the whole party. Also, try not to schedule back to back events.
- Take charge of your schedule– set up smaller get-togethers with a few friends or relatives so that you can really connect.
- Routine– establishing a good self-care routine. Often, you are out of your normal element and having some daily habits can help you feel more grounded. I like to wake up while the house is quiet to meditate and/or do some yoga. Also, I try to stick to a regular bedtime to get 8 hours of sleep.
Remember, we all enjoy this time of year in different ways, and that it’s ok to take care of yourself!
